Jezebel has an interesting piece about a new ad by the AIDS Council that uses Foursquare check-ins to illustrate the ol’ “You’re sleeping with everyone they’ve ever slept with” argument.
The commercial itself is kind of funny, to be fair. But something irks me about hiding behind social media references to disguise a tired, anti-promiscuity message as something remotely novel. Especially before throwing up the big red “AIDS”.
Yes: safer sex is best. Yes: having multiple sexual partners is one factor that may increase your risk of contracting an STI/D. But was there no one sitting in the boardroom when this commercial was proposed who thought, “Hey, remember when mainstream media demonized AIDS victims and portrayed prostitutes and gay men as disease-ridden savages because of their purported promiscuity? This is kind of reminiscent of that.”
All I’m saying is how about we stop sucking the pleasure out of sex with scenes that are brought to a screeching hault because – gasp – this dude had sex with other people too, and work on showing safer sex (with as many people as you damn well please) as hot, because that’s what it is.
In the words of Ani, “promiscuity is nothing more than traveling, there’s more than one way to see the world.”
P.S. The only mayor of my vulva is me.
