I never know what to expect when I tell people that I’m working at “The Art of Loving”.

When you first meet someone one of the ice breaker questions is usually; “So, what do you do for work?” Most people don’t really care but feel obliged to feign some interest to keep the conversation going.

Since starting here at the shop a couple of months ago, I’ve certainly had to think about whether or not I should be direct or discreet when answering that question.

I like to be open and honest about who I am and what my interests are but sometimes it just isn’t appropriate. For example, Thanksgiving Dinner at my brother’s home a couple of weeks ago. My mother and I were to be introduced to my brother’s girlfriend’s parents for the first time. Being from a very conservative background and a different generation, I’m quite sure they are not comfortable talking about sex.

I was a little nervous about whether or not they’d ask me about my work over dinner. Fortunately it never came up but I think my brother was sweating over it the whole evening. I guess this may be one instance in my life that I can be happy about working 2 jobs. Kind of like the Clark Kent/Superman scenario. Don’t worry “bro”, I’ve got it covered!
