Selecting a vibrator

How to find the Perfect Vibe for you….

Pleasure is as variable as the weather and when you’re in the mood for a new or a first vibrator it can be confusing. What to choose? What are all those shapes and textures for exactly? What am I looking for if I’ve never used a vibrator?

Here at TAOL, We’ve compiled a little checklist for that next sexy purchase. Use the following checklist to help you find your new ‘friend’…

1. FUNCTION – How do you plan to use the toy? Overall Vulva, Clitoris, G-Spot, Anally or more?

Vibrating Eggs can tickle your clit and your vulva, but they aren’t recommended for insertion, so if you are looking for external stimulation only they are great! We love the Laya Spot for vulva massage, and the O'My Double Bullet for both vulva and clit stimulation.

Looking for a penetrative toy with buzz? For vaginal penetration look at our wide array of vibrators. You’ll see that many of our vibes are covered in ridges, bumps and grooves. Those are for the inside walls of your vagina, which love stimulation. If you like hard penetration try something with pronounced ridges, like the from FunFactory, and if you like your lovin’ soft, look for a smooth or slightly ridged vibe like The Gigolo or The Worm.

G-Spot vibes have a curved hook at the end for those hard to reach pleasure centres. Our top selling G-Spotter is the G-Swirl, a purple pleasure sensation!

Anal vibes are popular, just remember that you need a flared base with any anal toy. Try the the Pro-Touch if your looking for an anal toy that vibrates.

2. USE – Is the toy for personal use or to share with that special someone?

If the toy is going to be used on more than one person you want to take into consideration whether or not you share bodily fluids with that person. If everyone who uses the toy shares fluids anyways, a rinse off is all that is required. However if you are not sharing fluids you need to be very aware in how you clean your toys, and we recommend using a barrier. Read more about the different material types below.

Bring your partner with you if you’re picking something together. If it’s a surprise go by the other criteria to decide. Almost all toys can be used together, one partner using it on another, or enjoying watching their partner use it. If you want something to stimulate you both at once, try a vibrating cock ring or double dildo.

3. LOCATION – Where are you going to use the toy? In the bed? The tub? Business? Trips?

For bedtime fun you can use any vibe, including a plug in vibe as long as you’re close to an outlet. Our Hitachi is a great plug in vibe with a strong buzz, and the sister vibe The Acuvibe can be charged and taken on trips. For business trips and such, try a discreet vibe like the Meanie. We have waterproof and showerproof vibes like the Worm Generation II (which is also a G-Spotter)

4. NOISE – Do you have thin walls, nosey neighbors, parents or children? Some toys are nosier than others…

Hard Plastic Vibes tend to get a rattling sound that can wake the roomies while silicone and jelly toys tend to absorb sound a bit better. Because Silicone toys tend to be manufactured at a higher quality, the motors won’t rev too loud, even after long term use.

6. DESIGN – Do you like the look and texture of a real penis, or prefer something with a different appearance? An egg shape? A dolphin shape? What tickles your fancy?

There are numerous different designs for vibes and not all the differences are functional. How aesthetically appealling you find your toy is important for some people. Penetrative vibes can be realistic, semi-realistic or non-realistic. Some of the vibes look like cute animals, others like a nice stiff cock and everywhere inbetween. This is a matter of preference, but think about how much appearance mattters to you. Do you have a favourite colour? Do you want something realistic or artistic?

7. BUZZZ… – Do you want intense vibration or something with less punch? Test out different units and see how they feel!

This one’s hard to know unless you’ve ever tried a vibrator before. When in doubt about vibration, ask yourself how much pressure you like to use while masturbating or being stimulated by a partner. If you like a firm touch, more vibration might be the key, if you like a softer rub than less. The Waterdancer packs a lot of punch into a mini water proof vibe, and the Meanie is a softer and variable alternative. If you need to really get the balls rolling, try a dual action vibe like The Rabbit Habit or the Mermaid.

The other buzz factor to consider is frequency... some vibes have a higher pitched buzz, while others have a lower more rumbly frequency. Everyone has a different preference and that is why it is good to come check out vibes in person if you have a chance. You can see how the different types of vibration feel on your hand (or even your nose, it is sensitive just like your special spot).

8. MATERIAL - Vibes can be made out of different materials... they all have their pro's and cons. We think silicone is the best.

Hard Plastic: Hard plastic is non-porous and generally fairly cheap. This means you can pick up a toy that isn't going to give you an attack of the yeasties for a fairly cheap price. The main drawbacks of hard plastic vibes are that they are hard (many women prefer a softer surface), can be a little on the louder side, and the really cheap ones are cheaply made (there are also good quality ones out there, ask questions, find out where it is made etc).

Soft Plastics/Jelly/ Rubber: These materials have the benefit of being soft and generally quite cheap. They have two main problems. 1) they are pourus, things can absorb in and be relased back out of them (read yeast infections) and 2) some materials in this category have been shown to release toxic leachates. Both of these drawbacks can be avoided by using a condom over the toy.

Silicone: Silicone is totally non-pourus, doesn't release any toxins and has a soft smooth texture. Potential drawbacks... it is more expensive and you cannot use silicone lube with them. Silicone vibes also tend to be manufactured by better companies with higher quality standards. You can generally trust your silicone vibes to last a long time.

If you’re buying your first toy, we suggest trying something with variable speeds and that you can use in a few different ways, just in case you don’t like it one way, you can always try another. However, if you know what you want and you’re ready for that state of the art dual action vibe, by all means go for it!

We also have some books than can help with that special purchase. Try Toygasms! by Sadie Allison or Sex for One by Betty Dodson.

Many Happy Vibrations!!
