What’s so sexy about not being able to see?

We see it frequently (even though they don’t!) but what’s the appeal?
You’ve almost certainly seen blindfolds in sex, whether it’s in porn or in play, this is an aspect of kink that is well-shown. But have you ever wondered why exactly we might find something like this sexy? The main reason is that it falls into the sensory deprivation kink, where eroticism is derived from being deprived of one or more of your senses, usually sight and hearing, and on occasion touch as well with numbing agents. So, what is it about not being able to see where predators are approaching from that makes our animal brains light up with eroticism?
The first reason is that without the option of sight, your other senses are heightened and this can make the sensations you’re experiencing feel even better than normal. With no visual stimuli, you’re forced to rely on your other sensations to tell what’s going on around you, and if what’s going on is sex, then it just means you’re really keyed into it and can experience more pleasure.
Another reason for blindfolding is that it removes external worries. Can’t notice the stain on the wall if you can’t see it. But for real, having your sight removed forces you to be present in your body and allows you to focus on the current moment. There’s also the excitement of the unknown- you can’t see, who knows what’s going on around you? Maybe there are a bunch of other people watching you, or maybe your partner is filming you, you’d have no way of knowing. Which leads to the last point-
Being blindfolded puts you at the mercy of your partner. It heightens submission by trusting them to be your eyes, by trusting them to treat you how you’re looking to be treated (whether that’s kindly or unkindly). You lose a little bit of agency in the scene and the decisions are made by your partner, which can be very sexy.
In any case, like many kinks, sensory deprivation and by extension blindfolding is all about giving up a little control and letting someone else take the wheel. Have fun engaging and don’t be afraid to try something new!
Happy (not) looking!
