What’s the Deal with Wax play?

How do you engage with the hottest (literally) kink?

Wax play is a form of temperature play practiced in a BDSM context, in which wax from a candle is dripped onto a person's naked skin, in order to introduce a slight burning sensation to the skin. This is considered a moderately advanced form of play- but don’t let that scare you away!

Common candle types (and which ones you can use)

-Soy candles which commonly melt at around 46–57 °C. (safe for wax play)

-Paraffin candles which typically melt at around 47–65 °C. (safe for wax play)

-Beeswax candles which commonly melt at around 62–65 °C (unsafe for wax play).

-Microcrystalline wax which commonly melts at around 63–93 °C (unsafe for wax play).

-Stearin which commonly melts at around 80 °C (unsafe for wax play).

Candle additives such as dye, oils, and scents may increase the melting point, whereas adding mineral oil will decrease the melting point.

Safety

Obviously if we’re dealing with candles we’re dealing with fire which means we’ve gotta talk safety. There are a lot of things to consider when engaging in wax play, but don’t let these discourage you. Knowing the risks and precautions to take are the key to engaging with the play. Different types of candles produce different temperatures of wax- they can range from warm and soothing to dangerously hot wax. There is significant difference between individuals' tolerance for heat, which can vary depending on exactly where the wax is applied. Wax can also splatter into the eyes, which may be harmful, and wax that is too hot can cause serious burns. Wax may be difficult to remove, particularly from areas with hair; a flea comb or a sharp knife may be necessary for wax removal; using a knife for this purpose requires special skills, though a credit card can work as well. Applying mineral oil or lotion before play can make wax removal wayyyy easier. Something people often overlook is the fact that wax can pool and concentrate heat. The temperatures we listed earlier only apply when wax is evenly/lightly distributed. Aside from this, everything that you’ll want to remember about normal candles applies- be careful of open flames, and use your common sense. We’re all adults here, let’s not catch any curtains or rugs on fire if you catch my drift.
